I reorganized yesterday's official numbers to fit the rumored classification proposal that breaks down 16-32-48-64-64-64+ for all sports other than football.  Who knows if this will pass or if the actual proposal even matches the rumors, but I figured it would be interesting to preview.  Here's how it shakes out.

Why do you have LRCA in the top 48?

Why do you have LRCA in the top 48?

Sorted the numbers, drew the lines at 16-32-48-64-64-64, and then bumped all the private schools up a class. LR Christian originally fell in the third grouping (48) and then bumped up to the 32.

It's being voted on in the Activity District meetings, look for it on the agenda in August at the annual meeting, from what I've been told.

Ok, makes sense, if it's possible out of all of this.

I was told that this proposal would be for the NEXT cycle not the '18-'20 cycle. But I could be wrong.

So, '20-'22? I was told one more year of blended conferences for everything but football, and then the new 16-32- ?????

Yes, '20-'22. That's the info I received from an AD. I guess the timetable could be moved up...we'll see.

Does this proposal mean 16-32-48-64 etc football schools or total schools per class?

It's my understanding that everything stays the same as is for football. The changes will be for the other sports. The 7A stays the same, the next 32 in 6A, or whatever you wish to call it. I don't know the numbers break down after those two, I didn't ask the class size.

I'm definitely not a fan of 16 team classifications. Those 5A conferences look good with 32 teams

Why did you bump up the private schools another class? For example, why did LRC move up to 5A but PA stayed down in 4A? I am trying to understand this. Thanks

Well, not according to the AD I was talking with last week.
According to the list of proposals on the Governing Body Agenda for 2017 (available on the AAA website), this will be for the 2018-20 cycle if passed.
Which means the current basketball conferences listed for the 2018-20 will be scrapped and redone.

When you look at this new scenario, PA's actual numbers would have them as a 3A school.  So, move them up 1 class to 4A.  While LRC's numbers would be a 4A school, so they would move up to a 5A class.  Or, that's how I'm seeing it.

If proposal 9 passes,  LRCA would be in the 4A group of 48, while PA,  Shiloh,  and Subiaco would be in the 3A group of 64. So LRCA will move up to the 5A group of 32 the other 3 would be in the 4A group of 48.  Note that CAC and Baptist would have 2A numbers and end up in 3A group of likely 64 teams. Remember, this does not affect football,  so I would assume that PA will not petition to play up another class as they have at times in the past.

My take on the proposal is that it basically affects the current 3A through 6A schools...but 1A through 7A votes on it.  It requires a 2/3 majority to pass,  but I would imagine the schools that are not affected will likely vote for it. I think the top 16 in 5A, top 32 in 4A, and the top 48 in 3A will all be against it because it will create a classification where they are the smaller group.   Not saying they will automatically be against it, just that I can see why they would be.  That's 96 votes out of about 300. If these schools are really against it,  their best option is to convince some 1A and 2A schools to vote against or abstain.

I have heard that it is basically a done deal, but I can see how it could get enough support against it to not pass.  My question then would be if the blended conferences would be back? If that's the case,  then I can see where it will likely pass.

I thought this problem was a solution to the dislike of the mixed conference's?

That's what I understand as well. I'm saying that for those schools that don't like it (probably most of them)  this seems to be their one and only solution at this point.

So there isn't a private school multiplier anymore? Their number falls in line with any other public school?

Thanks. I have another question.

So a school like Nemo Vista who was listed as a 1A school with a number of 119.67, will they be a 2A school now with this proposal? They have more students than current 2A schools like Mountain Pine (118) and Brinkley (114.33) according to the reclassification numbers 2018-2020 that were released in May.

6A - 16
5A - 32
4A - 48
3A, 2A, 1A - Total number of teams left divided by 3.  If it comes out uneven, 1A will have the most.  According to Ice Water, that breaks at 64/64/65.  However, that may change depending on how many of those teams actually compete (i.e. Quest Academy, The New School, Future School of Fort Smith - I have no idea if any of them play AAA athletics).  So that would change the numbers to 63/63/64.  So that would move the lowest public 3A (Two Rivers) to 2A, and the two lowest 2A (Nemo Vista and Acorn) to 1A.  Obviously, the more that don't actually compete would continue to adjust those numbers.

So my question is, if it fails will we go back to blended conferences or the conferences that are listed in the AAA website?

It will be going back to the blended districts for regular-season play, then back to conferences for postseason play, just like what happened last year and what will take place this year.

I don't understand why they can't leave things alone. Go back to the way things were before the stupid blended crap. Every time they mess with it they make it worse. This new proposal doesn't improve anything. If you're in the top half of 3A, 4A or 5A then you can't be happy about it at all.

Take it up with your local school administration...they vote on it

What do you suggest are the main concerns with the top half of 3A, 4A, and 5A?

That they will be moved up to the next classification and now be one of the smallest schools in that classification

Since it doesn't include football, I doubt they'll be a huge amount of opposition to it. I believe that made the proposal more palatable to the schools that would be affected most by it.

Maybe so but that doesn't make the proposal a good one.

It's better than the current set up but that isn't saying much.

First crack at the 4A if this passes for basketball/baseball/softball/etc:

Northwest: Berryville, Farmington, Gentry, Gravette, Huntsville, Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, Shiloh Christian
West: Clarksville, Dardanelle, Dover, Harrison, Morrilton, Ozark, Pottsville, Subiaco Academy
Northeast: Blytheville, Brookland, Forrest City, Highland, Pocahontas, Valley View, Westside, Wynne
Central: Batesville, Batesville Southside, Bauxite, eStem, Heber Springs, Lonoke, Pulaski Academy, Joe T. Robinson
Southeast: Crossett, Hamburg, McClellan, Mills, Monticello, Star City, Stuttgart, Warren
Southwest: Arkadelphia, Camden Fairview, DeQueen, Hope, Magnolia, Malvern, Mena, Nashville

Northwest is pretty compact and easy to put together.  West isn't terrible as a primarily River Valley conference.  Harrison is a bit of an outlier, but reunited with longtime 5A West foes Clarksville & Morrilton.  10 schools that could fit into the Northeast, but dropping the two Batesville area schools into the Central is the easiest move.  Central is reasonably compact.  Southeast and Southwest become pretty easily to sort out at this point.

Too lazy to match up the conference numbers, but I like the geographic names rather than the district numbers.  To me, it's more descriptive to have the 4A Northwest or 4A West instead of 4A-1 and 4A-4.

I think Harrison and Farmington would be swapped.

One problem with that is Prairie Grove would have to go through Farmington to get to games at Pea Ridge, Huntsville and Harrison. That's a no-no that is trying to be eliminated.
Another problem is Farmington would have longer trips to Dover, Pottsville, Dardanelle and Morrilton than Harrison does.

Exactly... Harrison is traveling far either way so why make Farmington's life miserable so you can save one school that already has bad travel either scenario a few miles?

The second statement may be true in mileage, but not in time.  The only shorter trip would be to Dover by 10 minutes by car, and it would be all interstate for Farmington and Hwy 7 on a bus for Harrison.  I'd drive that extra 10 minutes any day, and that 10 minute difference may disappear on a bus.

You all make valid points, and I hope you're right, but here would be an argument to back my statement:
1. 6 out of 7 of the trips are shorter (time wise) for Farmington than for Harrison to the "West" teams
2. 4 of the 7 trips for Harrison to NWA would be shorter than their shortest trip in the West - Dover (1 hr 40 min by car)
3. Hwy 7 is a terrible Highway to travel by bus, which they would take to Dover, Dardanelle, and Pottsville.  Hwy 23 is worse (which is how they would get to Ozark), but Hwy 21 is horrific (how they would get to Clarksville and Subiaco).  Farmington to all of these is mostly interstate.  Hwy 412 from Harrison to NWA is a very good highway compared to the others, especially once you get to Huntsville.

If you think more about creating the "West" conference first, then Farmington would make more sense.  If you create the "Northwest" conference first, then Farmington would make more sense for them.  Bottom line is that nobody is going to want Harrison in their conference, but they have to go somewhere.

FWIW, as a coach at Shiloh, I'd much rather have a 20-minute drive to Farmington vs the hour-and-a-half drive to Harrison, so I hope I'm wrong.

Best solution may be to make a 9-team conference for the NW and a 7-team conference for the West, although this does create other problems.

I placed Harrison in the West since that's similar to the travel that they're having in the current 5A West and already have the long-time conference relationships with Clarksville and Morrilton.  You're right on the travel being brutal no matter what direction they go.  Didn't see any reason to make Farmington or PG have the long trips just save Harrison a few miles.

9 in the NW and 7 in the W in this theoretical situation might be workable if it weren't for the girls' sports situation.  Having Subiaco in the West already takes one school out for girls sports and only getting 12 conference games would leave a lot of scheduling holes to fill for basketball.

It's an interesting problem to ponder and playing with the different combinations shows how difficult some of these pairings are for the AAA.  If this alignment passes, the 3A looks like it would be a giant headache.

I'm hearing that they want 8 teams in each conferences, no more 9 or 10 teams in a league.  It really hurt team on non-conference games and was one of the problems.  Along with force league game before Thanksgiving.
