I'm fascinated by what level schools used to play in the past and how they've changed. For instance, Pottsville was a Class B school in the 1980s and now they're a 4A. Marianna was in the top classification at one point and is now 2A, which is stunning.

How much has your school changed over the years?

tmycjy

Here are some that will shock u

Old 3-A East in the 1990's

Wynne now a 5-A school
Newport now a 3-A school
Osceola now a 3-A school
Marianna or lee county high school now 3-A school fixing to be a 2-A school
Marion now 6-A school
Batesville now 5-A school
Green county tech now  5-A school
Ridgcrest now Paragould now 5-A school

Greenwood at Osceola 1998. Worst officiating I've ever seen in Person. Phantom Pass Offensive Pass interference calls. Fattest refs I've ever seen as well, completely out of place to make calls.

A few months ago, I was having a FB conversation with a friend who is a Stuttgart alum. Part of it was a 1972 newspaper clipping showing the AP Top 10 with Stuttgart as #1. (That's overall.)

What caught my eye was the Class AA rankings and others that received votes. (Keep in mind that at that time the classes were AAAA, AAA, AA, A, B.)

The seven schools in what was then Class AA that received votes, with their current classifications:

Stuttgart (4A)
Rogers (7A)
Morrilton (5A)
Cabot (7A)
Conway (7A)
HS Lakeside (5A)
McGehee (3A)

To think McGehee was once in the same classification as Rogers, Conway, and Cabot back then boggles the mind.  Yet there they were!

How many different directions these schools have gone.

philip.seaton

Try a few of these results from Week 3 in 1933:

Carlisle 27, Little Rock Catholic 0
Russellville 13, Prescott 0
Glenwood 12, Arkadelphia 0
Nashville 58, Waldo 0
Springdale 19, Huntsville 0
Texarkana (Texas High) 31, Horatio 0
Newport 18, Tuckerman 0
Batesville 61, Cotter 0

The history part of high school football in the state is always interesting.

wildcat_x-mgr

Rison's local weekly paper always has one section called "Other Days" which shows headlines and partial stories from five years ago, ten years ago, twenty years ago, etc. Sometimes it's fun to see who we played (and beat convincingly) back in the forties, fifties, sixties and such. Watson Chapel, White Hall, Hot Springs, Hot Springs Lakeside, once we even beat Lake Hamilton by over seventy! Imagine that!

friscokid

I learned that Atkins is 7-0 all-time against Harrison. All those meetings were before WWII.

I remember when the old Class A conference in NWA in the early 90's to late 90's used to look like this below.... Went to AA when they got rid of the B schools and moved everyone up....

-Pea Ridge (will be 5A in 2020)
-Elkins (moving to 4A in 2018)
-Mountainburg (4-2A)
-Decatur (4-2A)
-Cedarville (4-3A)
-Greenland (1-3A)
-Shiloh Christian (1-4A)
***A random team or two closer to Ft Smith usually made the 8th team or even 9th team sometimes in the league

{Also of note in the late 90's those teams listed above Shiloh refused to play the Saints for a two year cycle I believe, causing the Saints to play a whole slate against teams one class higher like Prairie Grove, Gravette, Gentry, etc. which they play currently. Shiloh was awarded the 1 seed by the other teams forfeiting, but Greenland and possibly Cedarville claim conference titles in the late 90's that they did not actually win cause they forfeited to Shiloh and were the 2 seeds in the playoffs, but still claiming it in their own records. Greenland I know for sure in 1998, maybe Cedarville  in 1999}

I think one of those years was 2000....can vaguely remember some griping amongst Hector folks of having to play then as the 4 seed after Shiloh had played up all year...

friscokid

The AAA had to step in during the next cycle and force those teams to play Shiloh or else be ineligible for the playoffs. Soon after, the multiplier went in effect and Shiloh moved up anyway.

I can remember when Arkansas had hard cutoff numbers for each class:
AAAAA — over 1600
AAAA — 800-1600
AAA — 400-800
AA — 200-400
A — 100-200
B — under 100
I think that went away in 1991 when the AAA started ranking schools and going 32-32-64-the rest.

Southwest Arkansas and deep south Arkansas is the part of the state I am least familiar with.... Was Camden really that much of a population hub at that time? That is such a strange sight to think of 3 Camden high schools all in the same conference like that and kind of neat as well. Must have been some serious rivalry battles at some point in that?

There was actually another Camden High  School in Camden Lafayette back then. Camden Lincoln and Lafayette were Black High Schools. Seeing  how Lincoln didnt integrate until 1970 with Camden High they played in the 4AA . Prior to that the 7A Conference consisted of these Black High Schools.
Arkadelphia Peake Buffaloes

Tmycjy these are pretty cool! Great job!
It's very interesting to see just how the high school classes and conferences have changed over time and where everyone use to be.

Hard to believe Greenwood and Booneville use to play. And Booneville would wipe the floor with us lol

Check out the links in this story for some interesting info. (For example, Marianna was in the largest football classification in 1982, but now they'll be in the lowest.)

They built a New Camden Fairview High and voted to close Camden High. The Panther Alumni were not happy about it. The consolidation moved them up to 6A.

Obviously the trend has been rapid growth in the northwest, LR suburbs and Jonesboro area, rapid decline in the Delta, and everyone else holding steady or slowly growing. Back in the day the population was more balanced across the state. I think in the future it'll cause a travel imbalance that'll pressure the AAA to rethink its classification system yet again. I would like to see 6-man football be an option.

Yes, outstanding rivalries.  Camden & Fairview played first football game of the year.  Always a sellout.  Camden & Lincoln played second game.  Camden was a football school, but Bob Tutt had them playing well in basketball.   Pat Foster, who later was an assistant at UofA before being head coach at both Lamar and Houston coached Fairview in basketball. They were in top 3.  I can't remember Lincoln's coach's name but he coached everything. His soecialty was basketball.  Fairview and Camden in the late '60s has the misfortune of being in the same town as Lincoln.  The Tigers were state champs and were I think the first if not the only of the schools from the former Black association to win a title in the AAA.
My Dad was on the broadcast crew for Camden football and did Fairview basketball by himself. He did select Lincoln games.  The games between the three were always sellouts and intense.  One game between Lincoln and Fairview in the old old Fairview gym Lincoln didn't take a shot closer than the center circle all night and won. The next day on his sports show my Dad asked the Lincoln coach why? He said to see if we could. They won the game. Before the population shift south and east AR had some of the toughest teams in every sport and some of the bigger schools.

What I grew up with in the 1970s.  Some great rivalries and conferences/districts made sense.  With consolidation and population shifts not sure it would still work, but with a few exceptions travel made sense.  Of course under this system the old class B had three basketball conferences in Deep South AR. Area 12B had 15 teams, Area 13 has 22or 23 and it seems like Area 14 had 13 or 14 teams. There's probably not that many schools in all of south AR now.

They built a New Camden Fairview High and voted to close Camden High. The Panther Alumni were not happy about it. The consolidation moved them up to 6A.
Actually the Camden school district consolidated into Fairview. There were always three school districts in Camden: Camden, Fairview, and Harmony Grove. Camden was land locked. East of the river was Harmony Grove. Fairview was south part of town. In the 1989s Chidester closed and elected to go with Fairview over Camden, thus giving Fairview students west of town.  Camden was blocked in. It was a shame along with the downturn of the economy there.

Yes !!!!!  Funny thing is Camden Lincoln scored 1st. Then the halftime score was just 20 to 6. Hope scored 66 unanswered points. The Head Coach of Camden Lincoln told the Hope Staff Basketball Season was coming and would run the score up on the Bobcats when they played. LOL.  He did exactly that. Plastered 100 on Hope both times they played in Hoops.

And the Hope BB coach told the Lincoln coach it was not on him but on the Hope football coach.  It didn't matter.  The Tigers were very good.  They used to warm up with ABA Red-White-Blue basketballs.  For many years there were a few cars over in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood who proudly had 'State Champs' license plates on the front of their cars.

Tmycjy these are pretty cool! Great job!
It's very interesting to see just how the high school classes and conferences have changed over time and where everyone use to be.

Hard to believe Greenwood and Booneville use to play. And Booneville would wipe the floor with us lol

1993 Was the last year that Booneville beat Greenwood.  14-7 I think.  My Sr year.

Back in '69, I remember Rison playing Lake Hamilton (and beat them 89-0), Warren (45-0), HS Lakeside, Joe T. Robinson, NLR Oak Grove and some other large (now) schools that I can't remember. Most of those were conference games. They all grew, Rison didn't.

Camden Lincoln  Tigers
Texarkana BTW Wildcats  Lions
Malvern Wilson Dragons
Hot Springs Langston Bulldogs
Hope Yerger Tigers
Prescott McRae Tigers
Magnolia Columbia Owls

Glenwood was also in the Class B conference.  It was called 'Red River Conference.'   Those teams were in Area 12B and 13B in other sports primarily basketball.  Fouke and Bradley in 13 and the others were in 12.  It was a long ride from Glenwood to Bradley.
