Title: 6A West Facilities
Post by: DoYouKnowWhoIThinkIam on October 31, 2017, 10:53:03 am
What 6a West Team has the overall best facilities?

Here's how it works:

Rate the 7 Categories with a number 1 to 5.  (5 being highest).  Feel free to list your pro's and con's for each category.

1.  Field of Play (grass or turf, what do you think of the actual surface)
2.  Home Stands
3.  Visitor's Stands
4.  Parking (how easy is it to find a place to park)
5.  Concession Stand / Restroom Facilities
6.  Atmosphere
7.  Friendliness of the Home Fans (try to take your disdain for your rival out of it)

This should be interesting...............

Rating for Greenwood

Field of Play       -5  -  very nice turf that provides an excellent surface to play
Home Stands     -4 - Plenty big and I do like how they have the Band and Students separated at different parts of the field,  but I still feel there is room for improvements.
Visitor's Stands  - 4 -
Parking             - 4 -  usually plenty of room to park,  but some of it you are walking a good distance to get to the gate.
Concession Stand / Restroom Facilities  -4- lots of good options,  does have long lines,  but where in 6A football are you not going to have long lines.
Atmosphere - 5 -  Best in the business at least that I have seen in person.  From a constant packed house , to fire works and cannon going off on scores,   they really make it a great atmosphere
Home Fans -  5 - But I am a homer . .  .

Good questions. I will take a look at El Dorado.

1. Field - A solid 4.
2. Home and Visitor Stands - 5. None better in the Conference.
3. Parking - 4, but the downtown location limits options I suppose.
4. Concession Stands and Restrooms- 5. Very convenient and Clean.
5. Atmosphere - 4. Very consistent. Goes with a Historical winning Program.
6. Home Fans - Definitely a 5. Some of the most friendly and helpful folks in the Conference!

I went to the GW vs Benton game at Benton and was very impressed with their facilities. Overall rating would be a 4.5

U got to be kidding about Eldorado home and visitor stands! They are not even in the top 5!  Tex,Benton, Greenwood and SS are a whole lot better! Then u put that little old pressbox in it its terrible! Visiting coaches are outside in that so called visitor pressbox!!

I have to agree Hogman and I'm from Eldo. Benton (I hate to admit..lol) has the best IMO, but they are also the newest.  Never been to GW or SS.  Texarkana has the most seating capacity and easiest parking, only wish it was paved on the visitor side. I don't see how Eldo visitors find a place to park on the visitor side.

Last year when GW went to Eldo. The small parking lot on the visitor side was taken up by the Eldo. Band. I ask one of the band members if this was the visitor parking lot and the Band member said " we didn't think GW would have more then a handful of fans drive 4 hours"  HAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Ahhh....the band.  Most of the time they have no idea there's an actual football game going on.

It is a heck of a lot better but still not paved.  Honestly there's no reason to pave it.

The indoor facility adds to Bentons appearance just like Lake Hamilton.   The stadium is nice but not my taste.   It seems that all the new stadiums look the same with different mascots.  You really should see AHS stadium now with the renovation (more so the home side). Even like El Do I'll take the vintage concrete over aluminum any day.

My Rating for Greenwood

Field of Play       - 5  -  turf is new sidelines are not cramped thanks to track around the field also new surface. Wide open space...lots of room both end zones and well lit and stadium has a good PA system. Nice indoor facility with a Clemson type feel since must enter down a hill and has a Howard's-esque style rock  as well like Death Valley. New brick and wrought iron fence around the stadium.  All these things enhance the field of play.

Home Stands     - 3.5- No chairbacks or reserved seating - crowded most games so must get there at 5pm to get the seat you want. Need to expand and update.

Visitor's Stands  - 3 -  Small by comparison to schools in the area- VB, SS, NS all nicer. They should move home stands to this side and re-do the home stands

Parking             -  4 -  Plenty of room to park, I buy the pass so park right up in lot behind press box which is well worth it.

Concession Stand / Restroom Facilities  -3- Visitor concessions and restrooms need remodeled and expanded - old outdated in my opinion and unfortuantely it is the one the football booster club is relegated to. Home concessions are much newer and the band rakes in all the home crowd money. Pretty good selection of food and not overly priced. Restrooms are normally clean well maintained.

Atmosphere - 4 -  Great home crowds. Intro vid a little "Shilolish" this year IMO and totally distorted by the music/mic feedback- not a fan of that and detracts from the use of the video screen. Other than a few songs music needs to be updated yearly replace with a 4-5 new songs ever year. Overall a good job and a lot of work, just some tweaks. Fireworks are great, cannon, and timely music for kickoffs pump up the crowd and team. The new PA announcer is very good. Radio crew one of the best by far to listen to.

Home Fans -  4 - Some are spoiled in that all they know is GW as a winning program not aware or humble to the past struggles. Community as a whole very supportive of the team and avid fan base.  Seems like at times , people come for a social event rather than support the team. They can be a really quiet crowd as a result. This may be in part too because the Bulldogs are dominant at home. I think most are friendly and hospitable, but likely have a rep for being arrogant.

I'm not going to rate Benton's stadium except to say, all considered, I believe it to be the best I have seen.  I want to make a comment or two about the stadiums I have seen.  I really like the stadium feel and atmosphere of Texarkana's stadium.  The last time I was there I remarked to my wife about that but also felt the need for updating.  No problem parking and the people were great.  Eldo's main problem was parking.  Never had a problem parking at Greenwood and the people I came into contact with were not arrogant or unpleasant, on the otherhand the were very nice and helpful.  Stadium, although nice, was in need of an update.  Pine Bluffs was good in some respects but parking was the worst.  The visitors stands are terrible and need to be razed and rebuilt.  Other than the Zpound everyone I had contact with were absolutely great.  Sheridan has a terrible visitors side also, but do have adequate parking.  Visitor's side is worse than Pine Bluffs and is in bad need of update.  Concessions are inadequate and restrooms were totally substandard.  People were great!  Russellville was very good.  Parking was great and visitors stands were adequate but a little small.  Love the people there.  I haven't been to Lake Hamilton since they built the new fieldhouse or have seen any other improvements so can't comment there.  Those are all the stadiums I can comment on.  As for my other team, the Badgers, they have a great setup for football.  Concessions are very good on both the home and visitors side and plenty of seating.  Parking, right now, is not as good but will be better in a year or two when the new Junior High is built and the new parking is done across the street.  People are the best.  I say that because I am one of them!. lol

I'd have to go with Benton's facility in the West. Overall, there aren't any real negatives in that place. Texarkana is nice, too, and has been for years, but the majority of the facilities in 6A as a whole could use some updating.

I agree with you on a lot of things, especially the parking pass which I will 100% be purchasing next season.    This was my first year to really get into GW football, and watch multiple games.     I will agree with the fans as well,   their is always a huge crowd,  but at times they are quite and just expect to win.    But overall I think the fan base is really good.

Is that because they are the newest stadiums?  I just hate seeing all these stadiums the same.  There is no originality and at some you can just logos and no one could tell the difference.

This statement is true.  But the days are gone where money can be spent on originality.  Just the basic needs are met.  Field house such as Benton or Lake Hamilton are usually extras.  Plenty of seating, parking, and good concessions are a must, with adequate pressbox.  Most fields today, at least 4A and above  have or will have turf.  These are about all you can ask.

I agree.  While Benton is new and shiny, has abundance of capacity and parking is easy for the visitor crowd...it is a very sterile environment. No character.  I actually liked the old Benton field and how it was close to the stands, the wooden bleachers, grass field, etc.  I also like LH's field.  The facility has a "small school" atmosphere, or it used to until they built the huge fieldhouse in the East endzone.  And that's another thing, as visitors we are not staring into the sun for the first 30 minutes because the field runs East-West, but it could be hard on the players. LOL

Yeah you are right, it seems everyone are just hitting the basic needs.  Here in Texarkana I can go up the road to 4A Nashville and their stadium is the same as Benton and SS.  While in NWA about a month ago for work, just about all of the 7A West stadiums are built on this same style.  But when we venture off to stadiums in East/Northeast Texas this is not the case.

That old Benton stadium was unique.  With the proper upgrades it could've been something special.

Probably so, the person that does them, has done much better and even won the athletics program $25k with Eastbay. It's over produced IMO and may just be me, but I prefer flashback highlights and audio from significant games, not just the players jumping around flexing, pointing, catching the ball, etc. It's semi-embarrassing. Rather just have them be like Barry Sanders and  "act like you have been there before."  People respect that more than all the flash  and look at me antics, I think.

The music is so distorted and so much feedback, it makes it even more painful. Then the intro has some ring announcer, some other audio cut which is silly and enter sandman, and such...just need to stick with old routine with Sandman. As it is, it's way too much  - it's overload now.  I am all for hyping up the team, but the team doesn't even see that stuff before the game basically.

That's pretty much what we do in Eldo.  They also run across the video board a history of the program..."70 years in the Memorial Stadium, 13 state champs, how many all american, all stars, all state, etc".  We don't have a "hype video" put out by any outside source, Reed wouldn't approve that...so no "Shiloh mugging and thugging" as I call it.  LOL.  Any video of the actual players, they have their helmets off and are smiling for the video.  Reed doesn't condone any chest beating or posturing.

I think the video is great internally and for the players to have a hype video.

Seeing that stuff as a fan, doesn't hype me up though....I like seeing the great plays of past with a good ole TT radio call mixed in with some highlights of today. The video and sound is just not meant for the replay screen due to the distortion and feedback. It detracts from the video itself as a result. The video is not indicative of the TEAM concept CRJ hammers into the program IMO, but obviously there is a strong reason why he allows it. The loud music doesn't bother me at all if it's clear. I am open to all kinds of music. So, it's not just that. I'd take more Sandstorm and Zombie Nation being played...you know like gotta have more cowbell!!

Other than the game, I hope you guys enjoyed your time at WMS-Eldo. Cats came to play tonight.  Saw several injuries for AHS.  Hope those kids are OK, nothing serious. Good luck in the playoffs.
