He is a Huntsville boy.  Everyone always thought that he might be the one who would replace Stafford for the last 18 years...
I'm sure he is happy at Farmington.  He's done a good job there, has a good salary and situation.

Word on street is Prothro is thinking about getting into Admin. I would hate to see him go personally, Rose bud finally got some decent young talent in 7th and 8th grade would like to see him coach those kids but you never know....9th-12th grade talent level has been pretty bad IMO.

My guess is he figured out what most of us in Southwest Arkansas already knew. There isn't a commitment to basketball over there and the best kids in the school district go to other local basketball schools. Just look at how this job is being advertised by the school

Both.

Girls lost one starting senior who will be replaced by Gentry.  Very solid 5 players.

The boys, like someone said, will be good in 2 years when the 8th grade class moves up.  However, if the 2018-2019 class can muster a decent season, the move-ups would propel them to a much better team come tourney time.

What happened to the West Fork coach? I saw the football coach is leaving them too. What is going on at West Fork to cause both head coaches to leave?

Taylor to GCT seems like a sure thing at this point.  I'd bet the farm he isn't back at Brookland under Gross.  Weaver to Trumann could also happen.  So Brookland would have 2 spots to fill.  Mikie Slater (Rivercrest Girls HC) could make a return to Brookland.  Edgar at Highland is also from there.  Ryan Childers, former Bay asst. is from Brookland also.

With all that said, I have also heard rumors of a rift between the school board and admin at Brookland concerning Gross coaching next season.

not exactly surprised by that. Wasn't the best hire in the first place. They dont pay their BB coaches squat and don't have any history of support.  The guy they started off talking to who would've been much better, wasn't willing to take a drastic pay cut. They do pay FB coaches well though

True about the stipend.  The base salary is one of the better ones in the state.
Are they the only 7A school to not use a multiplier?

I believe that is correct. Them and maybe Catholic/MSM.
Their base is good, but they don't bump much for a master's, and the flat stipend is not more then 5K I believe, maybe a few extra days.  Most of his aren't gonna make more than 65-70 there, and there are Jr high coaches in 7A making that.

In that "market" for coaches I can see what you meant.  I guess they'll get what they pay for.   Not saying that they won't find a quality coach, but their facilities and other variables better be offsetting the shortage in pay.

someone will definitely want it. It's just kind of sad in that Springdale has no intention of developing a contender.  I'm not talking about a specific person, although I don't think their AD is the greatest, I think it's the community. FB has been the only thing that ever mattered up there. I get that. But it's kind of a shame in the modern age.
If you do a history lesson on that athletic department, I'm not sure that they've ever won a state championship in any girls sport.  I would hope they have at some point between the two high schools, but I've never heard of one...

Halbrook is from GCT or Paragould or that area.  Has coached for 3 years. Piggott Girls, Delta C-7 boys (MO), Benton Jr. High.  All one year apiece.  Walnut Ridge will most likely be a one year stop as well.

I believe Trumann is holding out for Brad Brannen.  Said this before, I know, but if they aren't why haven't they hired someone else by now.

You must not  be a bluedevil fan if you are encouraging kids to move.  All schools would be better off win or lose if they tried to improve where they are at.   How many families can afford to rent a place in westside school district.

I agree Mr. Ballmember, its sad that kids go where ever they want instead of trying to build teams in their home towns.

In other news I have recently required some camping lots and mailboxes in the west side school district. Will rent OCtober through March for a premium price

Just seemed that he would want to help his home school.  But honestly not surprised that he left talent level there seems to be dropping off.  I was kind of surprised that Westside didn't broaden their options on a coach.  I just think there was better young up and comers that might have been better options.  I agree Coach Brown can win with lots of talent.  But can he win without much talent?  Seems like he didn't want to find out

Loyalty is an outdated and overused word.  I doubt that 1A tiny Shirley was ever Coach Browns dream job.  Had he left for a bigger school and more money, no one would say anything about loyalty.  What's the difference between doing that and doing what he did? Absolutely nothing.  A group of parents or a singular parent can essentially have a coach removed.  So why should a coach of his caliber have to stay at any school?  He shouldn't!  He should be able to go wherever he wants.

As for talent, any coach can win with talent.  Take AAU for example, 75% of the folks coaching AAU teams couldn't coach a high school team to save their life.  But they win.  If I were coaching, id want to go to the school with the most talent to.  That's human nature.

Congrats to Coach Brown and Westside.  Should be a fun year in 1A.  All roads lead to Hot Springs and the ICC Cougars.

I guess if I was a coach at my hometown I wouldn't mind moving to a rival school to beat my home school.  I do agree that they will be deep in state next year.  They are  very talented.  I have been around Coach Brown a few times and he was always very professional.  I'm not putting anyone down for leaving a school to go to another I do wish him and both schools the best.

That's your opinion. That's cool I'm just saying you can't knock a guy for leaving a school and then bring up a random fact about tournament wins at the school he left. What's the point of that statement other than to find flaws in the coach? Don't have a dog in the fight but just kind of odd tiger would bring that up out of nowhere
Title: Re: Coaching Openings 2018

Wins are wins no matter where you get them.  Tournament wins carry just a little more significant value just because they are in a tournament.  Every game matters, however, every game whether in a small county tournament or a rival conference clash should prepare them for postseason.  Ultimately its the rings that matter.  No one really cares in 30 years if you won the Dunder Mifflin Shootout.  Going 32-3 winning every tournament you're in and losing in the first round of state isn't nearly as good as going 20-15 and winning state tournament.

You would think if at a 4a school you would care less what went on at 1 a.  Bigtig on the prowl.    Small schools do create the most interest and passion.    ICC will have a good shot at winning state they have recruited the best.  I have nothing against them.  Guy won a lot of state tourneys, they recruit extremely well.  so did Bay.  That is the path to winning unfortunately.  Don't start them in elementary, jr high and high school.  Get those real good guards in 10th 11th or 12th grade  .   Guy had the best guards that is why they won.   ICC couldn't run with them shouldn't have tried but their choice.    Most schools will never win state, but how about starting your year out and improving throughout the year with the talent level you have at your school.  Most places that aint gonna happen.  Times change.  Just like the referees many cant stand for fans to say anything, quick to pull the trigger.  The best officiating I have seen is in AAU, now keep calm.
The best coaches are in the stands and most schools they run things. And it aint good if junior don't get themost points and minutes !!!    Coaches have no backing at most schools.  It is a country of weenies !!!

Nice Office Reference!

I think he was saying that the players are the most important piece in a program, way more important that X's and O's. 9 times out of 10 the players are the ones that make the plays, a good coach will put them in situations to succeed. But on the flipside a good coach could put players in the right spot and they can't make the plays... players make the coach 9/10. But having a good coach makes a difference

Depends what school.  Big schools don't get their players until High School.  A small school coach will have players 7-12 so they can develop players.  If a coach waits to develop players until they get in HS its way too late.

Plays don't work, players work.

I agree that most larger schools, 5A and higher, don't see the majority of there kids until high school.  Mainly because there are just so many.  Several move away while several move in.  Whose eligible in 7th grade may not be in 10th.  However, if they really want to see them and develop them they could.  They just choose not to.

Any coach who doesn't spend time on skill work and player development is cheating his players, team, and program. Even college coaches with the one and done player works to develop his skills. Even the NBA sees the value of player development. "Too late" and not getting players soon enough or long enough is just an excuse to be lazy. A bad reflection on the coaching profession.

A coach can make them better in HS.  With two hours a day for a few years not great.  A player is made great before HS years.  You wait til HS and its too late for basketball to be great.  Not football

Manila needs to be very worried about Cabot taking Wimberley.  This would put him closer to his kids and he has been an assistant there before.  If he leaves Manila, it will open up a flood gates.

Honest question, what has Wimberly done that makes him so great?

Wimberly makes the state tourney every year, but that's about as far as they go. He can coach tho, not sure why Manila can't get over the hump

I'm still confused on how that makes him a great coach that everyone should want.

Alexandra Hart is the new Manila Girls Head Coach.  I was told she comes from the Pine Bluff area.  Other than that, I know nothing about her.

Bauxite has hire Brandon Kelley... I believe that's the right name.

Marion hired David Clark from Little Rock Hall.

Cabot is interviewing this week.

Per AAA, Pea Ridge is looking for an assistant.  This could be a great landing spot for a young coach looking to get his/her feet wet.

I'm curious to see if Wimberley leaves for Cabot, who Manila will hire to replace him.  Ashabranner at Rivercrest is from Manila.  He will leave behind a decent roster at Rivercrest though. Jordan Wise also from there if they wish to shoot their program in the foot.  Kenton Weaver would have been a great pick up for them.  Cody Edgar is also looking if Brookland Jr. High falls through for him. Still plenty of coaches to be had out there.

Who is WE? I've talked to several people at Manila and nobody is really pleased with it. Didn't she cuss out a coach at mountain home and pull her girls off the floor without shaking the other teams hand? Why would she want to leave a 6A school for a 3A school? Doesn't make much sense to me unless she has some baggage.

You will never get an established successful coach to agree to do football unless you pay them an insane amount of money.  You can get fresh out of college coaches to do it until they get their next job.

How can a school be competitive in any sport with the head coach pulling multiple assignments? I'm aware that smaller schools may have coaches doing basketball and baseball or something similar.  But for a head coach to do Football, Basketball and softball is very hard on them.  Probably a reason we haven't heard of some schools being successful at any sport.  You'll never get an established, good coach to pull 3 duties.

You said assistant.  Do the majority of his basketball players play football? Is he a coordinator or just out there for stipend?  What is his spring sport?  How long has he been at Drew Central?

Sorry for all the questions but you are trying to discredit what we said by a generalized statement about 1 school.

Besides, Great coaches have great players.

He has been at dc for 6 or 7 years.
Every good coach has good players. From his jr high teams that were so good one went to Conway who just committed to Oral Roberts, one went to Monticello and one went to Warren. He also helped with softball this year. Most of his players play football as they do at most small schools.

Again, we are talking about 1 school. Also, players that left are irrelevant.

"Helped with softball" is not what we are talking about.  How good were they? Most likely there for a stipend, too.

What is his postion on the football staff?  Is it of importance?  Or Assistant Safetys coach?

I'm not discrediting whomever this coach is.  Simply saying this is a rare occurance and even so, he isn't the HC of anything other than Basketball.  No matter what, the assistants of any sport will not carry the stress or pressure a HC does.

I don't think highly overrated is fair.  I've seen several undermanned teams win against athletes because of X's and O's.  Athleticism will prevail more times than not, but to say they are "highly overrated" is naïve.  They are important, very important in some cases, to high school basketball.  But in the end, Plays dont work, Players work.

X's and O's are very important in some cases... I agree with you on that. And in high school basketball athletiscm will not always prevail.. if you can get kids to be disciplined while running an offense and know where they are supposed to be on defense at all times, and they're lesser athletes.. you can win more games than a team that's just athletic!

Let's clear the air on why Brothers would leave Eureka Springs for Deer. He was reassigned; plain and simple. Just like he has at 2 previous jobs. Yes, you guys are getting a coach that has been ran off by at least 3 schools.

He was brought in to the principals office the day after the boys finished their season and was told straight up that he would no longer be the girls basketball coach. It's has ZERO to do with his daughter being at ATU. Don't let him lie to you.

It won't take you all long to see why he can't keep a job. Because he's terrible. Might be the worst basketball coach that's ever been given a job. He won't teach fundamentals (he'll tell the parents that's your job). I would bet every penny I have, that his first practice at Deer will be teaching everyone to jack up 3's (with terrible form) and 5 on 0 dry offense. As a matter of fact, that's all he'll ever teach. He'll never teach a minute of defense, or fundamentals, or anything other than jacking 3's and set plays he finds on the Internet.

Don't mean to run the man down, because I know he reads this, but the truth is the truth. You got the bottom of the barrel.

And from what I seen of the deer girls last year, it'll be about what they had anyway out of their last coach.

A question I would have is "have their girls ever been relevant"? I can't recall their girls ever having much success. I also wouldn't say someone is a hero just because they make regionals.

So since they haven't had much success, then the people of Eureka should settle for being embarrassed every night? Come on, man. There is a really good group of girls there right now. Wining 17 or 18 games this year won't be out of the question.

And I say hero because the fans and the kids are STARVING to have some success. Getting to regionals this year with the entire team back next year (there won't be any seniors this year) will be a HUGE success.

I'm not saying you shouldn't expect and desire success. I am also very unaware of your team/kids, but I don't immediately place blame on the coach. There are usually a variety of factors that lead to some teams/schools lacking success and isn't always on the coach. I am also unfamiliar with your departing coach as well, I just try to make an unbiased opinion.

Coach Adam Brothers is a stand up guy from all I have ever seen or heard. I know he had to win more than 12 games in 4 years since he had a winning season with his jr high a few years ago. From what I remember Eureka has always had terrible girls teams & he has got about all he could out of what he's had. I remember at his past schools he has had some good teams that could flat play ball. Maybe the new coach will have more success since he's a home town boy & won't have kids out & hurt all the time. I've never seen teams to have the range to shoot from so far back other then his bad form or not. If his son is anything like his daughter then he'll be an asset to any team. I don't blame the guy for leaving after seeing all the crap being said about him. I would say Deer is lucky to have him.

I'm a little late to this, but a coaches record doesn't always indicate their ability to coach. There are a lot of bad coaches with good teams and a lot of good coaches with bad teams. Knowledge of the game. Relationships with your athletes. Etc. those things don't always show up on the record. I don't know the coach at hand here, but to sit there on your keyboard and question a hire simply based on coaching record is asinine in my opinion.

Billy Murray was let go from Earle allegedly for something non-basketball related.  Earle is now looking for a coach, although don't expect to see this posted anywhere.

I'm hearing that Hunter Robinson from Harrisburg is the new boys coach at Rivercrest.  If this is true, this is in no way an upgrade for them.  Seems as if Harrisburg will be open now.  They will most likely take the cheapest option available for all you young guns out there.

O I forgot about that.  Yes that makes him an obvious upgrade.  He also beat Gosnell, so he should be better than Glintborg.  And he beat Riverside so he must be better than Buster campbell, but then again he also lost to them when they had one of the worst seasons in awhile.  He also beat Bay a couple years ago so lets give him the nod over Brad Brannen.  Ummm.... NO.

Rivercrest could have had Billy Murray.... 5 or 6 rings including the last 3?

NO... They went after Hunter Robinson because he does not have the ability or resume to stand up to the football program.  He will lose many key players to football and will do nothing about it.  He is in no way an upgrade to Ashabranner.  At best he is exactly the same.

And before you go off about Earle has great athletes, thats why they won so many titles.  You'd be right because plays dont work, players work.  Just like players from Harrisburg beat Rivercrest twice.... NOT Coach Robinson.

Harrisburg has an opportunity to make MAJOR improvements on their basketball program if they so choose.

Not sure why he would have to "stand up" to the football program. Rivercrest has always done a good job of promoting that kids play multiple sports. And the new Rivercrest head was a long time basketball assistant and head coach there. He will not pull kids away from the basketball program to only play football.

Now...if you're saying the new guy won't be a big enough name to pull kids to the basketball program that might not otherwise play, that may be true. But I don't know anything about the guy.

I was wondering if the new Manila girls coach has started. I think she did July 1. How is practice going , Cotton Hog.?

I thought I read few weeks ago from Cotton Hog this was the best hire Manila has made in a while! July 11, NO SHOW so far. I hope it works out but track record indicates she might not have changed.

Good get for Midland, still don't know why he left Abundant Life, he was about to be given the keys to the kingdom over there had he been patient for a year.

Midland boys filled by Ryan Johnson. He was assistant at Carlisle.

That'll be a tough job because they don't have much of anything on boys side and not much coming up either.  The last two coaches really set it up as a crappy situation for whoever takes it.

First two days of practice have been good. It's been a shock to the girls system, but the girls seem receptive. Lots of work to do

Several teachers/coaches jumped ship at Abundant Life.  The Superintendent was fired about 6 weeks before school was out.  The High School principal took a new job. No one knew what the job situations would be this year.  Overall, the school is in a pretty bad place as of last year.  New hires have been made, but it was made clear major changes were coming to the school.  They have lost several families and staff members.  My guess would be he left due to all the uncertainty.

As small as Abundant Life's enrollment is, a major shakeup might put the schools future in danger

I heard about the shake up from one of the parents, didn't know it would be as drastic as it's been for them. It's been a tough last 10-12 years for them.

I believe the new Head of Abundant Life had formerly been at Conway Christian.  The school is now called Abundant Life Christian Academy, I believe.  Hopefully, things will stabilize for them.  Aren't they 2A?

None of the coaches that were there last year have left.  Basketball, baseball and softball are all still the same.  Johnson left year before last to go to Carlisle...his leaving then didn't have anything to do with what happened this past school year.

Yes she is from Conway Christian and has renamed the school.  Hopefully, this will keep some of the bad from being the first thing that pops up when searched online.

After doing a little research, we are very excited about Coach Hart! She has been the head coach at Pine Bluff the last two years. She has D-I,II, and semi pro playing experience. Good hire
This sure hasn't aged very well.

Although I think a person missing an arm is completely capable of coaching and doing a great job...I would not recommend willingly giving up a right arm for this opportunity. For one, most people are right handed. Would be very challenging to demonstrate shooting form or a 2-hand chest pass with only one arm.
