The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.

That story totally rocks.  No pun intended.

Short stories are great, and Americans are great at writing them.

My favorites:

A Rose for Emily--William Faulkner
The Lady or the Tiger--Frank Stockton
By the Waters of Babylon--Stephen Vincent Benet
The Outcasts of Poker Flats--Bret Harte
The Swimmer--John Cheever
A Good Man Is Hard to Find--Flannery O'Conor
The Ransom of Red Chief--O'Henry
An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge--Ambrose Bierce
Who Goes There?--John W. Campbell
Fall of the House of Usher--Edgar Allan Poe
The Man Who Would Be King--Rudyard Kipling
Harrison Bergeron--Kurt Vonnegut
The Secret Life of Watler Mitty--James Thurber

Just to name a few.

According to rumors, Wes Anderson has shown interest in directing this. His previous films include "The Royal Tennebaums", "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou", "Rushmore", and "The Darjeeling Limited".

I like Thurber.  I think he wrote a story called something like, "The Night the Bed Fell Down."  It was pretty funny.  Mitty may be corny, but I still like it.

I heard they were turning Harrison Bergeron into a movie, too.

Uncle Ivan

What is the name of the short story that involves one man hunting another one on an island, then a fight to the death at the end?

Haven't read it since high school and would like to read it again.

I believe it's called "The Most Dangerous Game".
