Indoor season is right around the corner. Good luck to all.

~WPS~

I've started on my season preview for all classes.

RATTLER43

Sounds good. I will work on mine for Class 2A. More to come later on...

I will enjoy checking back each month and seeing how this progresses.

I put this out there before:  How is it handled at your school when you have multiple athletes in an event and only so many get to compete at invitationals?  They all work equally hard.  Do you just go with your two best each and every time. What if #2, #3, and #4 are all about equal? Rotation?

How will chambers leg effect him in the jumping events?

RATTLER43

Will have to wait and see. I think he will be fine. He is such a great athlete and hard worker. He should be released after Christmas.

~WPS~

In Nashville our coach usually rotates early in the season until he finds the two best consistent performers. Then with two home meets every year and district the guys low on the depth chart get to run plenty.

RATTLER43

Thanks. They all need to compete but it is difficult to get them all in.

~WPS~

Another thing is in the first few meets coach puts the best in each event to try and qualify them for state and then when they do, allow others to compete the next week or so.

Of course there will be new names and faces that moved in, moved up from junior high, or that just flat out improved. These are based upon last year's results so they are really just a starting point. Once the season gets rolling and we have some results, I will try to update. If you know of some others such as Weddle from Carlisle and have solid data to support it throw them out here.

AT

Thanks for the information, Ballplayer. Keep it coming. 6A looks to be stronger than it has in recent years.

I wanted to share some info about the Arkansas Razorbacks track and field team.

According to T&F News magazine, Arkansas had the 4th ranked recruiting class and tops in the SEC.

Here are the kids from Arkansas high schools that will be on the team this year.

Hunter Bourke - Fayetteville HS - 400 hurdles/sprints
Neil Braddy - FS Southside HS - Sprints
Alex Chaffin - LR Catholic HS - Mid-Distance
Caleb Cross - Newport HS - Hurdles
Travis Diepenbrock - Bentonville HS - Distance
Cameron Efurd - Rogers HS - Distance
Aaron Hamilton - Rogers HS - Distance
Andrew Irwin - Mt. Ida HS - Pole Vault

AT

Here is the same kind of list for the girls

Courtney Falco - Salem HS - Distance
Kirsten Hesseltine - Springdale Har-Ber HS - High Jump
Grace Heymsfield - Elkins HS - Distance
Whitney Jones - Searcy HS - Sprints/Jumps
Lauren Kegley - CAC HS - Pole Vault
Chelsey Roberts - Searcy HS - Jumps
Ariel Voskamp - Cabot HS - Pole Vault

RATTLER43

Razorbacks have top 5 recruiting class!  If Bucknam can coach we should be great this upcoming season; barring injuries, we should be incredible. Look at those stats and add them to what we have.

Sweet!! Thanks for the update AT. Love them Hogs and hope we can get dominate again.

FilmCrew

Mount Ida has another Pole Vaulter that jumped 13'2 as a ninth grader that has been jumping again...Maybe another 2a champ?

RATTLER43

At 13'+ he should win it. Where was he last year?

FilmCrew

Well, I think that he had a lot of irons in the fire and chose not to jump.

RATTLER43

Understood. Good luck to him. They are in our track conference(go figure that one out) and that will have impact on my strategy. Our best is 11'+  only.

FilmCrew

They also have the current state champion in Girls Pole vaulting returning.

Looks like another tight one between Heber and Nashville.  Nashville's field events vs Heber's running.  Also, Nashville girls should win it again--6 in a row-- with Monissa Poole setting a new overall record in the 400.

Thanks, that group is really athletic. I'm really looking forward to this Track season with those girls, I just need to find 1 or 2 more jumpers and shot put & discus.

RATTLER43

Yes they are. They look tough to beat. How have they done in conference play so far?   They are so quick and agile.

I have always held him, along with Southside's throws coach, in high esteem.

Here is how ours have fared at State:
2000 Dan Smith discus 6th

2001 Ramone McDonald 6th shot
         Justin Yates 3rd discus

2002 Justin Yates 3rd discus

2003 Ryan Barrett 6th shot
         Justin Yates 8th discus

2004 Ryan Barrett shot 3rd
         Ryan Barrett discus 9th

2005 Ryan Barrett shot 6th

2006 Allan Fairbanks shot 3rd, Steven Freeman 10th

2007 Steven Freeman shot 7th, Jon Williams 9th
Steven Freeman discus 3rd, Josh Young 9th

2008 Jon Williams 5th shot
Jon Williams 9th discus, Courtney Bryan 6th girls discus

2009 Jon Williams 1st Discus, Daniel Aydelott 10th discus, Courtney Bryan 8th girls discus
         Jon Williams 2nd shot

2010 Jon Williams 1st discus, Andy Moua 2nd discus, Daniel Aydelott DQ(ranked #2 going in and had no throws in in prelims!), Lorraine Dority 6th girls discus

Jon Williams 3rd shot, Skyler McElroy 8th, Jay Moua 11th

2011 Skyler McElroy 1st shot, Dustin Medlin 12th, Lorraine Dority 12th girls shot, Courtney Bryan 13th girls shot

Courtney Bryan 1st girls discus, Lorraine Dority 5th, Cari Bryan 6th

Our girls program began in 2008. Courtney Bryan was the only girl on the team that season and the only one until district and state (moved up freshmen) in 2009. Our throwers have come a long way. Last season we had one girl over 100, two others over 97' and 94', and two others over 80. Lorraine and Cari both expect to go over 100 this season. We love throws!

Many perennial powers are known for certain events. I know Alma is good at all but seem to be great at throws and mid-distance including 4x400m and 4x800m relays. Lake Hamilton is always good at distance and pole vault; Magnolia always has sprinters and hurdlers; Southside has throwers and jumpers; Nashville always has good throwers; what events define your school?

Hey, gg, what do the senior boys at Westside look like?

RATTLER43

Senior boys track team, that is.

oldboar

rattler 43 looks like your year, but augusta will do it's best to defend title, we'll throw it together after BB season like always, and hope to peak , first of may. your pretty close on your totals, but like you said we have a freshmen blazer, might even have a couple hurdlers, but with only 3 hurdles to practice on? will be much deeper in distance and may have best 4 x 800 team yet, and may suprise in triple jump, can't afford to get down 25 pts. and comeback this year, think we'll have another 800 guy go under 2;10 and 4 under 2;15, got to have some jumpers come thru. high jump pit is ,pallets, car tires, wrestling matt "hard" volleyball standards and an actual highjump bar. doing more with less that's our motto at augusta, "speaking of equipment". untill the daffodills bloom!

groundgame

Westside boys will be better, but not on the same level as you and danville. I think i'll have more out this year and in a few events we have a chance to be decent.

I always take Augusta into consideration. I think JC will be really tough this year. Gurdon and Magnet Cove could be loaded as well. Mineral Springs always has some competitors(when I first got into coaching MS was the dominant program). We will be strong again. There are two options as always: we will win it all or we will not.

We will work hard, meet our potential, and be good at every event. If some team beats us they will have earned it. We have never won a state title in track but...
1999 3rd
2000 5th
2001 6th
2002 3rd
2003 3rd
2004 4th
2005 8th
2006 3rd
2007 5th
2008 12th
2009 3rd
2010 2nd
2011 2nd

A 1st in 2012 would be icing on top of all those great seasons. Our main objective is the same every year: to be the best we can be. We are not swayed by ESPN and the media pushing that you must be the champion or you are a failure. We teach life lessons in track here in Magazine. That is not to say it is not one of our goals. It is. But we know that if we have worked as hard as we can and have done all we can do and we do it with class and respect for our sport then we have been successful. We do want to beat Danville and all other conference teams because they are rivals and it will mean we are conference champions; we want to beat Booneville because they are our next door neighbors and rivals plus a good measuring stick since they typically win their conference at 4A level; we want to beat Augusta because they have knocked us out the past two season; but to us it is really about us doing our best and not about beating someone else. We respect any team that beats us and we hate to be beaten. I hope all of this rambling makes any sense.

If Augusta wins a third in a row they will join a select group of champions over the years. I know they will be tough again. Good luck on another great season.

I agree with you completely rattler.. The only downfall about winning a state championship is that you are now expected to do it year after year.. Cross county rivalries or conference championships become only a small stepping stone.. even years after Crossett made that run of 20+ state championships years ago, their expectations have not let up, which is unfair to the athletes of today.. It is like making millions; that 100 bonus at work doesn't mean much anymore.. I think Magnolia and Alma have handled the pressure well, but we didn't have a dynasty before the year 2004.. I guess my point is, to all the coaches out there who just teach winning, it has to go hand in hand with Rattlers philosophy because at the end of the day, we are shaping tomorrows leaders.. "Failure" will happen, but as long as your kids are giving 100%, the word doesn't exist

Thanks, MHSGrad. I don't want to imply that we are not in it to win it; we are. But I want us to learn things along the way and enjoy the journey.

Finally, we should teach "winning" and what it takes to win but also to get back up after "failures". Getting back up is as important as anything.

Leaders of tomorrow....  So true. We all must be in this thing together.

I know MHS will be good. They always are. How do they look in comparison with past 6 years' teams?

AT

Since we are on the subject of how track impacts kids beyond conference and state championships...

(This is kind of long)
I had grown up playing basketball at Alma my whole life. I was pretty good, I started throughout junior high. My dad was a basketball coach (not at Alma) and I knew all the ins and outs.

I grew up around the sport, but by my 9th grade year, I was completely burned out on it. I had no desire to play basketball anymore. I decided to stick with it in 9th grade because I didn't want to quit on the team, but by 10th grade I was ready to be done with it.

My parents convinced me to give it another chance at the start of my 10th grade year, and I said I would for one 9 weeks. I went through the 9 weeks and still had no desire to get better in the sport. I decided I needed to quit before the season started, and so after a lot of discussion, prayer, and awkward talks with coaches, I quit. It was strange for me, because I had never been a "quitter", but I knew it was the best decision for me. I didn't really have a sport to fall back on either...but my friend Colton (the legendary Matt Mason's little brother, lol) convinced me to try out track and field.

I remember walking up to Coach Mac my first day of track and talking about it and he said "Ok, get with the rest of the team and lift." And so I did. Not too many practices later, I was proving myself to be one of the better distance runners on the team (Alma had lost a stud 4 x 8 team to graduation the year before). By the first meet, I had earned my spot on the 4 x 8 team, and those 3 guys are still some of my closest friends.

Each year of track was different for me (at the state level that is). I experienced being so close to the prize but not being able to grasp it my sophomore year, being on the top of the mountain my junior year, and getting dominated by Magnolia my senior year. Yet, I would relive my sophomore and senior years over again if given the choice, because I learned about overcoming adversity, helping out friends, and what it takes to be successful in life. No doubt, Coach Mac is one of the top role models in my life.

RATTLER43

Great story and exactly what I am talking about.

MHSGrad

Depth at the sprints is very strong.. this is probably the best overall in field events that we have ever been.. our weakness will be distance, but it will be so spread out that the 800 is the only race that might hurt us.. Overall, this is probably our 4th best team.. 1 and 2 being Alexanders junior and senior years and 3rd being my senior year, 06..

RATTLER43

That will be tough to beat. Good luck this season. Spring will be here in the blink of an eye.

MHSGrad

I know that i say it every year, and they seem to choke, but Cfv scares me.. we are better than our competitors or even with them in almost every event( better in hj, disc, lj, hurdles, and 400; even in 100, 200, 4x1, 4x4, and shot, except for Alma; Vilonia will probably going 1,2,4 in pv, but we should place 2) Our main strength is consistency over all the events.. Last year, we won 1 event at state and still won. All of our sprinters will be seniors this year, along with most of our jumpers, so hopefully their senior leadership will take over

RATTLER43

Sounds like a great group. Also sounds senior laden. How will you be in years to come. I know we can only speculate; but as fans it is fun to discuss.
