polksalet

I don't like the idea of the main skill players getting time in the secondary and I'm skeptical how much that'll happen. As best I can tell safety is a little light without snell.

From looking with a scope at 4A teams, secondary will be an issue for quite a lot.  Especially depth concerns.  A lot of teams are playing some of their best WR's in the defensive backfield too.  Recipe for disaster if the injury bug strikes, but some teams have no choice.

AirWarren

Very rarely does a team in 4A have that solid of depth. If they do, it's because they are just in uniform and nothing much more than that. 32-50 kids on a 4A roster is average.

Romeo

That's the way it is when you get down to 4A and below. Depth is always going to be an issue for some teams at the classification level. However, it isn't an excuse for not winning the state championship. Some of the best teams in the past have won titles with key players going both ways.

Yup. Look at Booneville last year. Warren in 02/03.

LJ06

Depth is always a concern and usually most teams weak at depth is in linemen. This year it seems to be in the defensive backfield more than anywhere. Some pretty good linemen out there in 4A this year btw.

CounterPunch

I think Star City's defensive backfield is going to be much much improved. That's where we needed to improve.

I think you could beat CAC for sure although I think it will be close and could go either way. I also think you guys will beat Lonoke and if not will scare the scrap out them.

Their offensive backfield along with linebackers will be some of the best in 4A. They can run it down your throat will Turner and they have a very good QB. Their defense is stingy and teams will be hard pressed to score many points against them. One of the most talented teams to come through Newport in some time IMO.

Lonoke is our Achilles. Never have good luck with them but I'm optimistic this year. I really see a win at Arkie, CAC, or Newport before Lonoke

The Cougars should have a great year. If they can limit unforced turnovers.  I agree the 1st game of the year will show if the Cougars are ready to play.  Looking forward to playing in a new conference.  Good luck to all the teams

Interesting username.....

Personal dislike or bitter??

DogsWin7

I don't personally like the position grades of players.    Maybe it's a girl thing, but I think that it really isn't a fair assessment of the players ability to some degree.   However, I understand that it can help with recruiting a player in certain aspects....is that accurate or no??

Some of you guys please enlighten me too how that works, if you would please.

I think this could be the surprise team this year.

Helena-West Helena Cougars

Week one against Dollarway  will tell us a lot about the Cougars
yep, and tell us a lot about Dollarway

Too bad they have to play week one, personally if they played later in the season, I think that it would be a much better game!  Someone is going to get the wind knocked out of their sails early on.

IMHO it's an assessment of individual talent but means absolutely nothing in the win loss column.

Can I ask who or what determines the grade of the player?

I understand that missed tackles, completed interceptions, sacks etc are all calculated for stats on a player....but why grade them, other than for it to be used for college recruiting purposes?

It seems kinda mean to grade a player with a F or D etc....if the team hasn't ever won a game.

btw, I'm pretty sure these aren't lj's grades but he is giving info from different sources and adding his opinion as to how each conference will play out.

IMO life being mean is not a bad thing.  I'm a firm believer in failing!   In order to truely know how to be successfull, win, succeed at life, etc... you must first learn how to lose, get rejected, etc in order to appreciate winning in anything. You develop or learn very important life lessons when you are beat down and have your back against a wall.  Some rise up and some dont.  Thats life.  That is one reason i believe sports in general is extremely important for youth.  Their are so many lessons in life to be taught on the grid iron, basketball court, etc that aren't taught anywhere else in a childs up bringing.

Competitiveness, grades, performance, and skill go way beyond a high school football field. Life is tough. Life is mean and it won't slow down for the weak. Better be able to take criticism and evaluation. If people see that as mean and teach kids that is mean, then they better get ready for a rude awakening outside of high school football.

A lot of truth in that statement. It's a tough world in all aspects.

Not as mean as grading some of these posters.
