New bleachers are set to be installed this summer at Helena-West Helena's Cad Polk Stadium.  It is the first major improvement to the football facilities since 1972.  It's the first of several improvements being planned.  Cougar fans are excited!

Congrats! Might come see it week 1 for the Dollarway game.

Will there be more space between the sideline and the track?

HorseFeathers

is helena-west helena still controlled by the state?

westhelena1

The position of the track is remaining the same.  We do remain under state control, but we now have a local advisory board appointed by the Department of Education.  This is a project that many in the community have been wanting to do for a long time.  It had become not only an aesthetic issue but a safety one as well.  This is going to be a nice project.  Cougar Nation is excited.

Good news Thanks! When will they be done

The construction schedule confirmed with the contractor last week projects that the home side will be completed in time for the first home game on September 5 against Dollarway.  They will start on the visitor side seating on September 6 and have it ready for the September 26 game against Newport.

So...the season's been over since November and they're just now starting on installing new bleachers? That sounds about right.

Did you ever stop to think that this may have been the earliest possible date for the contractors to get the work done?

Did you ever stop to think that maybe they could hire different contractors?

I'm glad they're doing it, just seems like they're cutting it a little close to the start of the season and apparently they won't have it finished in time for the first game.

There were delays caused by the bureaucracy that had to be navigated in Little Rock. That took several months. By then, we were behind projects in other districts that committed before us. It isn't that anyone in Helena dropped the ball. And when it is finished it will be a huge improvement for our program. We are excited even if the schedule cuts it very close.

Cad Polk is another Delta school with the Press box on the visitors side. Other than that its not that bad. The turf will look nice in that place. Unlike Wynne, it won't have that Boxcar Willie look and Jed Clampett feel to it ! LOL !

Man Im just ribbing them. But you would think a school with that much tradition & 4 State Titles they would have a nicer facility. It looks like a smaller version of the old UAPB mistake by the lake stadium. That trailor press box with one door on it is hideous ! Cad Polk on the other hand will look nice when finished.

Southside Batesville's is like that as well. So I guess it's not a Delta exclusive thing.

It's a few more I guess. As you go to different stadiums around the state all of them have something unique or strange. I hear Batesville finally centered their visitor side. Malvern cleaned up Claud Mann Stadium. But that handicapped ramp has a 75 degree incline on it. Somebody going down that thing is gonna go airborne in a wheelchair one night !

SUGARTOWN

^^^Did Malvern get rid of the deer stand "press box" on the visitor side?

No it's still there

Hoghead

Oh that band bleacher section in Malvern is almost as bad as the one in Ashdown. But Claud Mann is better now. Dick Hays Stadium in Ashdown does have a nice covered picnic concession area. They finally removed the death stump telephone poles with cable wire running through them that surrounding the field !

Monticello had those until the remodel about 12 years ago.  Apparently someone actually thought those were a good idea 50 years ago.

^^^^^^^^^^ Every stadium has interesting stuff that makes you laugh.

Back in the 80's the Pressbox side was the home side. They switched sides in the 90's but left the press box on what is now the visitors side. Maybe one day they'll decide to build a new press box on the home side. Glad to hear about the upgrades. Pics please....

Good info Govhog. Cad Polk Stadium favors Sheridan's Stadium some what. If you've never been to Wynne's stadium you must do a Google search and check it out !!!
