Title: Top 5 4A Boys Teams
Post by: centralarkansasbasketball on May 02, 2017, 12:07:44 pm
Who does everyone think the early top 5 boys teams in 4A are for next season?
Title: Re: Top 5 4A Boys Teams

Baptist Prep
Bauxite
Monticello
Batesville Southside
Warren
Pottsville
Prep at the top and not sure where the other 5 rank but that's my top 6. They were all young this past season.

Monticello will be average at best next year. They graduated a lot from a team that couldn't make it out of regionals.

They were playing some 9th graders too. I think they will be a surprise.

Two 9th grade guards. They aren't moving up anything else from last years junior high that can help. I highly doubt they will be in the top 5 conversation next season.

Well this list is no good now anyway since Baptist Moved down and now Mills moves up... So, there may be some shake ups. Never count coach Loyd at Pea Ridge out.

I considered them. I think they were more a product of their weak conference but the close loss to Cave City was impressive. They will be in the mix.

I think the 4A Region 1 Conference will be tough. Pea Ridge, Gravette, Prairie Grove and S. Christian should all be really good.

The 4A-1 and the 4-4A will be by far the toughest region to get out of this coming year. Pottsville and Subi will be tough but on the other side you got Gravette that returns a bunch and Shiloh and Pea Ridge will be tough as well. Basketball in the 1-4A is on the rise I know at Lincoln we will have the best 9th grade class we have had in 10 years.

It would be a long shot to repeat the moderate success they had last season.  Unfortunately, Subi does not develop their younger players very well.  Outside the top 8-10 guys, during practice, the others are simply left to 'play' on the other side of the court on their own without much supervision or instruction.  There is no real program in place for development.  They are only losing two Seniors, but those two were the entire inside for the team, so a good opponent should be able to expose them badly on the inside next year.

Regarding Subiaco Trojan basketball, everyone is entitled to state their opinions on this open forum, so I'd like to go on record as a Subi alum and Alumni board member.  We have a rich and proud basketball tradition at Subiaco Academy.  When I was a student here in the mid to late seventies we were lead by Coach Don Branham.  His teams showed that a small private school could produce good basketball squads.  Not long after Coach Branham left Subi a young coach came in and  continued the winning ways of the Branham era.  Coach Tim Tencleve is a dedicated man, dedicated to teaching young men about basketball, but more importantly instilling life lessons through basketball.  Coach Tencleve's record speaks for itself. For Razorback basketball fans I see an analogy with the Razorbacks and the Trojans programs.  Coach Eddie Sutton put the Razorbacks on the basketball map and Coach Nolan Richardson built on that and took the program to a higher level. Likewise Coach Don Branham put Subi on the basketball map and Coach Tencleve has built on that foundation and lead the Trojans to a 25 years of quality basketball teams.  His teams rely on hard work, hustle and determination to compete in the competitive 4A division.  You cannot have the success Coach Tencleve has had without being dedicated to coaching young men and developing their skills along the way.  As I said earlier , everyone is entitled to their personal opinion and so there is mine. I think a vast majority of my fellow alumni would concur.  A young man can come to Subi and be assured of a quality education and quality coaches and programs that lead our athletic teams.

Go Trojans!

I think this is a decent top 10.  Even though Connor has left, I expect Baptist to be really good.  They've got arguably the best PG in the state ... the 6'5 kid inside is not bad.  They've got another athletic guard that is pretty good.  They've got a couple of shooters too.  They'll be more flexible defensively... I've seen them press and play some man defense.  They'll be less predictable on defense.

Bauxite has everyone back on an already good team.  I think they will surprise some people.

Mena was good and young last year as well.

Pottsville has a shot to be the number 1 team.  They were young a very long in that 1-3-1 defense.  Lost a gritty guy to graduation, but the core is strong.

Warren has an outstanding guard that can break anyone down off the dribble.  Then of course they have some long athletes in their 1-3-1 as well.

I'm not familiar with what Nashville has now.  I know their best player graduated I think last year though.

I agree that if their guard play is good enough, they can. They will have a chip on their shoulders after being ousted in the first round of districts. They had a tough matchup right off the bat though...

Baptist Prep makes it 3 in a row. Best player in the 4A and it's not close. Probably the best coach. And they have 3-4 other guards who would be the best player for a handful of other 4A schools.

Wow baptist must be really strong. I figure losing conner would put a hurt on their chance of three peating. But i guess they will still be hard to beat. Nashville lost their best scorer and their best post. Still should be pretty good. Ashdown and bauxite should be pretty good also both bring back alot of their top players. Plus if jaden hill plays give ashdown a big lift.

Bauxite and ESTEM definitely have the best shot of knocking off Baptist Prep. They play extremely hard and tough and have given Baptist a lot of fight in the past. They have both come really close to beating Baptist and now that Connor Vanover is gone it is much easier. Baptist Prep is definitely not the overwhelming number one team. Honestly everyone says they are number one just because they won the last two years but Bauxite has an extremely balanced team and ESTEM just brought some new big people in. Baptist does not have any real scorers other than Issac Mcbride but we will see how things play out. Southside Batesville and Brookland also has a really high chance of beating Baptist if they were to play.

Do you know anything about their game against Jonesboro Westside because I saw that they beat Westside by 1 point. I feel like Westside would have won the game if Southside was not playing that well. Westside played a competitive game against North Little Rock and made a ton of threes against them. Avery Felts and Riley Felkins I heard are playing great and Gage Sheffield is contributing more this year.

I'm not saying they're not a good team, I'm just saying based off of the game I saw I wasn't overly impressed and didn't see a team that will win state. But, I have a small sample size so it could have just been an off night.

Isn't Baptist Prep the team that has a player over seven foot tall?
No, Connor Vanover transferred to Findlay Prep in Nevada.

Top 5:
1. Baptist- Until someone beats them
2. Pottsville- Return alot
3. Warren- Return alot w/ a good transfer
4.Batesville SS- Return alot
5. Pea Ridge- Growing school/ alot of talent

Who is the Warren transfer? I believe warren returns 4 starters from last years team. Also have stepped who moved up as a freshman last year. And they return all state player Treylon Burks.

For sure, Westside and Brookland are both top five teams in 4a and people are sleeping on them if they do not think they are capable of winning the 4a state title. Both teams have incredible talent but Avery Felts still stands out amongst them all. I would probably give Brookland the coaching nod.

That's two good teams to open things up against.

Nashville has played some really bad teams so far.  Finally get a game Friday at Prescott.  Warren will be by far the best team Nashville has played.  Interested to see if Nashville is as good as they look or if its just the lack of competition.

They're real quick to the ball and have a big man down low that they didn't really use that much. Guess it was more of a zone defense

I think they played mostly a 1-3-1 last year.  They have returned just about everyone from last year.  Very impressive defense the few times I saw them.  Plus, incredible athleticism and size.

Yea they're good. It was only 20-16 at half but they came out firing on all cylinders and jc couldn't answer other than turning the ball over 20+ times it seemed. I hope we can turn it around and be competitive but not looking so good for first game of the year

How did Burks and Steppes look?
Burks is just a beast... in any sport. Will take him a while to get some touch back, but is probably averaging 15-20 rebounds in first three games... he is just a difference maker.

Steppes ball handling and shooting is not where it needs to be yet... but he will get there. He is still fearless when taking it inside.

The team is primarily playing a 2-3 zone on defense and a motion offense.

The outside shooting of this team will be better than last year, but still not great. The team just has size all over the floor and on the bench.

Quan Sanders the kid with the short dreads is a monster and would get D1 offers if he played for a better AAU team than the local one in Stuttgart. He is the 2nd best player in the state behind McBride. He has a college shooting guard body right now and has skill to back up his athleticism.

Yea I need to update the rankings soon. I just do the rankings for fun and to see what others think too. I have never heard or seen this Quan Sanders guy and do not see his name on Stuttgart's roster. Also could not pull up any videos of him playing. He already has a college ready body with strength coming from football. I hope a sponsored AAU team could come see him play so he can get on a team and showout this summer to gain some offers because that local team won't get him anything at all i doubt.

I assume he is talking about Timquarian Johnson who is a highlight waiting to happen or David Walker. Walker is their best player right now and is leading Stuttgart in most categories. Averaging about 20 per night... real nice player. He was an absolute beast at DE for the football team too.

Pottsville is definitely the most slept on team. They played well against JA Fair a top ten team in the state. Wesley Heikes, Landon Reed, Jacob Chisum, Tyler Duvall are all very solid scorers and very tough and disciplined defenders.

It would be a good game for sure but Jonesboro Westside in my opinion has way too much firepower on offense. They are a best three point shooting team. They have two players (Avery Felts and Riley Felkins) who are very good at shooting off the dribble as well as catch and shoot. Cullen Felkins, Gage Sheffield, and Kessler Mack are all high volume three points shooters. Stuttgart definitely is a bigger and more physical team though. David Walker is underrated and Tim Johnson is crazy athletic.
Title: Re: Top 5 4A Boys Teams
Post by: Grand Prairie on January 24, 2018, 07:59:51 pm
We really don't know how good Stuttgart is IMO.

Sure, they are a 5 point road loss from being undefeated but their blended league is putrid aside from Helena and to a lesser extent Dumas.

I don't know that I would categorize them as physical... they are actually crazy athletic and lightning quick. Teams struggle to get into an offense due to their pressure.

Walker has been incredible and once Johnson fully figures out his new role as a secondary scorer to David's primary he will get back to scoring in bunches.

The only option to defend them, short of having some serious length, is to play zone and hope they don't shoot you out of it. Shooting, in addition to depth, is Stuttgart's biggest offensive weakness. Aside from Walker and to a lesser extent Jake Banks they don't have a consistent outside shooter.

All of that being said, if Stuttgart can defend without fouling... good luck to whoever is the opponent. Quick does not adequately describe this group.

If all goes well, next Friday night's home game against Helena-West Helena will be an absolute war.
