Title: College Football Coaches and State Troopers
Post by: Adjudicator on September 12, 2010, 07:48:09 pm
Who and when was it decided that college football coaches needed to be escorted everywhere they go on game day by state troopers.  If they are so valuable to need police protection on Saturdays why are they not escorted 24 hrs a day?  I realize our governor needs it and POTUS needs it.  But college football coaches?  This practice has jumped the shark.  And now they (troopers) are even running out of the tunnel onto the field with them.  I watched several games this past weekend and all of them had the state boys in tow.

I've always wondered that myself....

Do you guys not watch the news and understand the nuts that are out there.  Sadly, more people care who their football coach is than they do their governor.  Better to have them and never need them than the opposite.

Probably because college football coaches are among the highest paid state employees. And yes there are a lot crazies out there.

All of you make valid points.  But, they don't have this "protection" 24 hrs a day.  As amatter of fact, I could drive right up to the residence of the ASU football coach and knock on his door.  There are no troopers there waiting either.  But on Saturdays during football season, he has one in tow from the time he hits the field till the game is over.  Then he drives himself home.  I think he (or any other football coach) is safer in a packed stadium with plenty of security (other than the attached trooper) than he is walking from his office to the car at night.  Just sayin......

Now as far as HDN goes, after that debacle last week he probably has the secret service at his side!

For years I thought it was a southern thing simply because I didn't see TO or any other coaches up in that area with state troopers around at games.  But, when I'd turn on the TV I'd see them with coaches from the SEC or SWC.

That's too keep Bo away from the B12 officials........  ;-)

College coaches may or may not want the escorts, but I would think the universities may require them because there is just too many negative consequences for all involved if an altercation of any kind should occur.

I think they are protection for the poor SOB(s) (because your going to need about 7 if there armed 15 unarmed) who decides to rush him

Do the other state D1 coaches get the escorts?  UCA? ASU? UAPB?

Arkansas Tech played @ Albany State University during the D-II playoffs in '05 and there were georgia patrolmen on both sidelines for that game.

I think it entirely depends on the magnitude of the game, even the little teams do it in some situations.

There was one for Terry Bowden when North Alabama played at Harding last year.  I'm sure it wasn't any different for any of his other games either.

It is a state law in Alabama. I've heard it called the Bear Law.

That was probably more to keep the UNA players from stealing stuff.  ;)
