At the Downtown Tip-Off Club luncheon Monday, most of the talk was not about basketball.

Guest speaker Marvin Delph, a member of the Triplets, the foundation of Arkansas Razorbacks basketball, was extremely entertaining and informative.

He talked passionately about his life and career.

Delph was an excellent speaker and a diversion from what seems to be the one thing on the minds of people in the Natural State, the state of Razorbacks football.

The Razorback nation is deeply divided for what seems like a thousand different reasons.

The big whisper over the weekend and into Monday was something big is supposed to happen today.

Huge was the word on the Internet.

There is no need to go into all the rumors, or for that matter, not enough space in today's sports section to list them. They all became a distant second in the discussions Monday morning.

" Did you hear Houston Nutt is replacing Bill Parcells as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys ?'

That was the big question / statement of the day.

Tuna did retire from the Cowboys on Monday morning.

Talks of Nutt replacing him came hard and fast, but they were not something the Arkansas coach or his agent Jimmy Sexton planted.

They were the product of Cold Pizza on ESPN 2.

Those guys were talking about possible replacements for Parcells, and Skip Bayless said something to the effect that Jerry Jones might look into the college ranks and then said Houston Nutt was a possibility.

Whether or not Nutt is really a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys, the most prestigious job in all of coaching, he does remain the most polarizing figure in the state.

It seems more than six months since Gus Malzahn tendered his resignation to join the staff at Tulsa, but it has only been eight days.

Mitch Mustain asking for his release seems like ancient history, too, because those two incidents together have caused the rift among Razorbacks fans to further fracture.

Over the past week, some things seem to have become clear.

Nutt and Frank Broyles (evidently he told the Dallas Alumni Association the experts he quoted about the offense not working was him ) grew to not want Malzahn on the Razorbacks' coaching staff, and a deal was being made with David Lee as early as last March.

If that is true, that means Malzahn was hired just to get the Springdale players, and that would account for why so many of the Springdale people are upset.

While it is not limited to them, the majority of the unrest comes from the good people who live in that city, and they feel Malzahn was used.

And Lee's hiring seems ironic on two fronts. First, at the very least, he was being hired as a cocoordinator at a time when Rob Taylor was summarily fired as director of operations for budget reasons.

Second, Lee is supposed to implement a passing game that will complement the running attack, but just four years ago, his leaving enabled the Razorbacks to sign Landon Leach.

Leach was a record-setting passer and did not want to play in a run-oriented attack.

When Lee left for the Cowboys, Leach was told the Hogs would be going back to their old style of offense with lots of passing.

Leach, of course, got hurt (talk about another sad story ) and had to quit football.

That is not rumor or innuendo; the Leach recruitment is well-documented.

All of which just confuses the already muddled picture even more.

As for the big thing coming down today, a source says there was some sort of power-broker meeting Saturday in Fayetteville.

Private, of course.

Seems the conclusion was everyone stays put but that Houston Nutt needs to continue to win, which could be said about any coach in America.

Yet, something big will happen today, guarantee it. There will be more unrest and rumors among the faithful but divided Razorbacks nation.

Just like yesterday and the day before that.
