The SEC outdoor track and field championships are getting underway today in Lexington, Kentucky (that blue track is a sight to see).

Today is just the first half of the heptathlon (for women) and decathlon (for men). I will post updates on here for the Razorbacks and other teams as they come in.

Live results can be found here: http://branchsportstech.com/2014_Meets/outdoor/05-15-sec/index1.php

AT

The women have already begun. In the 100 meter hurdles for the heptathlon, the two Razorback women athletes competing did well. Both of them achieved a PR on the season.

Alex Gochenour for the Razorbacks ran a 13.83 (1003 points) and Leigha Brown for the Razorbacks ran a 14.12 (961 points).

This puts Gochenour and Brown in 2nd and 4th place respectively after 1 of 7 events in the heptathlon.

Up next: The women heptathletes will compete in the high jump in about 30 minutes.

The men decathletes will compete in their first event, the 100 meter dash, in about 10 minutes.

AT

The men decathletes just completed the 100 meter dash.

For the Razorbacks, Brad Culp (FAYETTEVILE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI) ran a season PR of 11.13 (832 points). Lane Austell also ran a PR of 11.47 (759 points). To round out the season PRs, Nathanael Franks ran an 11.54 (744 points).

Culp, Austell, and Franks are in 4th, 11th, and 12th respectively after 1 of 10 events in the decathlon. They have the Long Jump coming up in about 30 minutes.

AT

The Heptathlon High Jump and the Decathlon Long Jump are about to finish at the same time.

For the Razorback decathletes in the long jump, Nathanael Franks jumped 22' 0.25" (746 points), Brad Culp AND Lane Austell both jumped 21' 2.75" (691 points), both PRs on the season for them.

The overall standings after 2 of 10 events completed in the decathlon have Culp in 7th, Franks tied for 8th, and Austell in 11th.

For the Lady Razorback heptathletes, Leigha Brown cleared 5' 4.25" (771 points) and Alex Gochenour cleared 5' 6.5" (842 points).

This puts Brown in 6th place and Gochenour in 3rd place after 2 of 7 events in the heptathlon.

Up next: Interestingly enough, in the decathlon and heptathlon we have the shot put up next, so that will be interesting to see how the Kentucky officials handle that. I'm not sure if they have two Shot Put rings or not.

AT

AT

Both the heptathlon and decathlon shot put just finished up. I guess Kentucky does have two shot put rings.

In the heptathlon Shot Put, the Lady Razorbacks had Alex Gochenour throw for a new season PR of 40' 6.75" (685 points) and Leigha Brown throw 39' 11.5" (673 points).

Right now, after 3 of 7 events in the heptathlon, Gochenour sits in 3rd place and Brown sits in 4th place.

In the decathlon for the Razorbacks, Nathanael Franks threw the shot 41' 10.5" (653 points), Lane Austell threw for a new season PR with a throw of 37' 10.5" (579 points), and Brad Culp threw the shot 37' 10" (578 points).

Right now, after 3 of 10 events in the decathlon, Franks sits in 6th place, Culp sits in 9th place, and Austell sits in 11th place.

Up next:

The heptathletes finish out their day with the 200 meter dash while the men continue with the decathlon in the high jump.

AT

Also, the first event of the 2014 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships has been scored, the Women's Hammer Throw.

The Lady Razorbacks had no competitors and here's how we stand score wise after this event:

The decathletes are just now starting the high jump.

AT

The decathlon high jump just wrapped up. It's a weak event for the three Razorbacks competing, but we still got two new season PRs out of it.

Day 2 of the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships begins in about 7 minutes. I will be doing updates again.

The Razorback men finish their decathlon and the Lady Razorbacks finish their heptathlon. The men will start off the day for us at 11:00 with the decathlon 110 meter hurdles.

The ladies won't get started until 12:30 with the heptathlon Long Jump.

The multi-events aren't the only thing we have today though. We will have three finals - Men's Hammer Throw, Women's 10000 meter run, and Men's 10000 meter run.

There will also be some prelims where we hope to get a few Razorbacks qualified for finals.

AT

The decathlon 110 meter hurdles just finished up.

This puts Franks in 4th place, Culp in 9th place, and Austell in 11th place after 7 of 10 events completed in the decathlon.

The decathlon pole vault is up next for the men. For the Lady Razorbacks, the heptathlon just got underway with the long jump.

Also, the Men's Hammer Throw just started, but no Razorbacks are competing in that event.

AT

The heptathlon Long Jump was just completed.

The Lady Razorbacks, Alex Gochenour and Leigha Brown, jumped 18' 6" (744 points) and 16' 10" (595 points)respectively. That jump by Gochenour is a season best.

After 5 of 7 events completed in the heptathlon, Gochenour sits in 3rd place and Brown sits in 8th place.

The decathlon pole vault should be starting pretty soon. In the heptathlon, the ladies will throw the javelin next.

Also, the Men's Hammer Throw is still ongoing.

AT

The skies opened up in Lexington and forced the decathlon pole vaulters to move indoors...

But the heptathlon Javelin Throw just finished.

For the Lady Razorbacks, Leigha Brown threw the javelin 109' 3" (539 points) and Alex Gochenour threw the javelin 105' 2" (515 points).

With just one event remaining in the heptathlon, Gochenour sits in 4th place and Brown sits in 8th place.

Like I said, the decathlon pole vault is still ongoing indoors. The running events are up next, but won't come up until about 3 hours.

For the lady heptathletes, their final event is the 800 meter run.

Also, the Men's Hammer Throw has just finished, which will be the focus of my next post.

Well, I'm not going to be able to do updates today unfortunately. I have some prior business to attend to this afternoon and will have to catch up on the meet myself after I get back.

This is the live link to today's results: http://branchsportstech.com/2014_Meets/outdoor/05-15-sec/Timetable.php?D=4

Also, at 1:00, if you want to watch the meet, then go to espn3.com and watch it there (if you are able).

For those interested, both teams have a shot at winning. I would say the women have a better chance than the men at this point, but it's going to be a fight both ways.

In the men's race, A&M, Florida, and Georgia are the main competition, in that order.

In the women's race, Florida, A&M, and Kentucky are the main competition, in that order.

They even had some things go wrong today. Their 800/1500 stud, Stephanie Brown, had a bad day, placing 4th in the 1500 and not placing at all in the 800. Yet the Women still went out and got the win.

The men had some unfortunate things happen, but I'll speak more about that later on.

It's in Eugene, Oregon again.

I'm sure the final 2 days at least will be televised, but I'm not sure on what. CBS does the Outdoor championships sometimes.

On the other hand, Fayetteville is hosting the West regional. This meet will decide who goes on to nationals and faces the athletes from the East region.

I may go down there and watch this meet. So if someone else is interested, let me know.

When is that meet? I'm a U of A student but didn't make any track meets this year and I'd really like to hit this one if I'm free

Hey 12th Man CHS, good to see you are interested in going to a track and field meet. I do think I need to warn you about this one: It's not as interesting as the scored meets are. This meet is treated as a qualifying meet only. There are no scores, individual champions, or team champions, so it's hard to become invested in it.

I don't want to discourage you from going, so here's the important info:

It's actually a 3 Day meet...May 29th, 30th, and 31st.

The schedule of events can be found here: http://results.flashresults.com/2014_Meets/Outdoor/14NCAA/ (just click on Schedule button to open up the document)

To give you a little insight on what this meet is about...

So the regular season has wrapped up and throughout the year athletes have been performing in events.

Well after the regular season has ended (which it has), every team in the NCAA is broken up into one of two regions, East or West.

The NCAA then sends the top 48 athletes based on best times, distances, or heights in each region to their regional meet. (48 to the East and 48 to the West in each event).

Arkansas is in the West, so you will be seeing teams all the way from Arkansas to California.

What this meet essentialy is, is a meet to take the top 48 athletes in each region in each event and break it down to 12 athletes in each region in each event.

These 24 athletes (12 from each region) will then go to Eugene, Oregon and compete for a national title.

The only exception is that the relays go from 24 in each region to 12 in each region. They do not take 48 relay teams.

The reason I say this meet isn't interesting as some other meets is that...in pole vault for example...they will start a beginning height with 48 pole vaulters. Then these guys will jump until there are 12 pole vaulters left and then they will stop. They don't go until 1 athlete remains. There is no champion.

I don't want to discourage you from going though, so here's a few things you may want to watch for if you do end up going:

1. Look at the schedule and see what day or days you are most interested in seeing. I recommend May 31st, because you will see a lot of events that decide which athletes go to Eugene.

2. Since you are a Razorback fan, keep an eye on those athletes. Are they finishing top 12 in their event? Are they advancing each round? This will make it a little more interesting for you.

3. Look at the main competitors from this region and hope they don't do super well. The main competitors in the West region are Oregon and Texas A&M. We don't want them sending a lot of athletes to Eugene for the national championships.

I personally love these type of meets, because it makes the athletes earn their spot in the national championship on the track and on the field. If you do end up going, let me know and maybe we can meet up or something. I can maybe make it a little more interesting for you too by giving you some more information.
