Anyone know the status of the Midland boys position? It's been open for a while now? Thought they were supposed to have a good group this year, but noticed they finished at the bottom. Any story on that?

football has put a hurting to the boys basketball success.  too small of a school to start up a football program without hurting basketball in a big way, imo

Nomad1324

That and stepping up in classification probably didn't help.

In the long run it should help.

They went from a pretty bad 1A district, to a bad district(2A-2)...Don't think classification had much to do with this years failures...

How so? Surely they have more than the reported 12 athletes that chose to play football this year?

You take a school that small, with 1A numbers, and start football, those kids don't dribble a ball from late February until November. It's hard to compete like that.

Right now in process of interviewing for position. Midland basketball has been down for few years. Starting football has nothing to do with the unsuccessful basketball seasons. Loosing one of the best coaches in our area and then going thru 3 different coaches in 3 years has hurt the program.  There is talented group for next year. Hope they can get a coach who turn this program around.

Just because you are playing footb all doesnt meen you cant dribble a basketball. Sounds like something else besides football is hurting the program.

ab24

any time you add a sport like football to a school, especially a small one, you are going to hurt the basketball program.  there are many schools that serve as an example for this.  you are setting up both football and basketball to struggle for years

I don't think ab24 likes the fact that Midland added football. We've only heard it three times

ab24

im only responding to the ones that think football has no impact on the basketball.  I believe that there probably are other factors as well, but fball plays a role in it too.

Clarendon has 1A numbers and the kids play basketball year round...maybe not formally in practice but they play in their off time.  They have full access to the gym in Holly Grove and use it regularly.

MomaLion...yeah and y'all produce crazy athlete after athlete. Sometimes it's about the genetics more than anything else.

MomaLion

Oh it's absolutely about the genetics...most of them are cousins lol. The entire Holly Grove community is all about basketball and they practice/play regularly.  It's really great that they are able to utilize the old Holly Grove gym...keeps their heritage alive even after the consolidation.

I would agree with the thought that adding football at Midland did not help the basketball team.  It may eventually, but I think that will be long down the road.  Too many examples of this through the years. There just aren't enough athletes to share.  Kids get hurt, football coach tells them to quit basketball, whatever the reason.  Melbourne used to have a really good basketball team. Now there's football.  Forever ago Yellville had good basketball.  Then football came along and they've struggled more often than not.  The only years they've done well in basketball was when the football team was down.  Melbourne and Yellville are both 3A schools.
Sure there's a toughness and benefit from the weight program, but basketball is such more a skill game.  Shooters gotta be in the gym.

mtindian42

Just need a string of good athletes to come threw there. and all will be well

ab24
