Greenbrier PanthersGREENBRIER PANTHERS Conference: 5A-West Head coach: Bill Buckner Record last year: 0-10, 0-7 Points scored, points allowed: 95-364 Playoff appearances since 1968: 12 Last playoff appearance: 1995 Playoff record: 8-12 Key returning starters: RB Ethan Mann, QB Jordan Duvall, SE/CB Zach Richard, OG Thomas Black, OG Wesley Miller, C Jake Duvall, TE Tanner Burrow, DE Colton Fieker, DE Sean Maxfield, LB Troy Proctor, CB Nick Zimmerman, CB Darin Gentry. Outlook: A roster chocked full of 40 sophomores, including 13 that started, made for a long year last season for the Greenbrier Panthers. Greenbrier paid the price for sending 15-year-olds up against seasoned 18-year-olds in the rough-and-tumble 5A-West, and the result was an 0-10 ledger. The Panthers return seven starters on defense and would have more if Ben Lawrence’s career wasn’t ended by lingering shoulder problems and Joey Marquis hadn't have moved to Nevada. That still leaves the Panthers with hope going into the 2007 season, just not quite as much. Offensively, returning quarterback Jordan Duvall and Sean Maxfield were neck-and-neck coming out of spring practices. Maxfield is a returning starter at defensive end and start there again this season, but could very well see some action at quarterback as well. Maxfield's older brother, Nick, threw for 1,664 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior in 2004 and starts at safety at Henderson State University. The younger Maxfield is not as fast as his big brother but has a stronger arm. Running back Ethan Mann and split end Zach Richard return as well on offense. Greenbrier returns four starters on the line in guards Thomas Black and Wesley Miller, center Jake Duvall and tight end Tanner Burrow. Comments from Buckner: 'We've got to be consistent and sound. We've got to have great effort and not make mistakes. We played all the kids one way last year. We knew we were going to struggle because of how young we were. We tried to get as many kids on the field as we could. We're a year stronger and a year older. The kids have really worked hard in the off-season. We're not really a spread team. We're more of a Wing-T team. It fits out kids. Our linemen are not very big. The kids are strong and pretty quick, but our opponents aren't going to run for the exits when we warm up."
